Yosemite

US Popularity Rank: 12000

Origin: Native American

Meaning: They are killers

The mention of Yosemite brings to mind images of the stunning national park in California—the cliffs, waterfalls, clear streams, and meadows. The land was once occupied by the Ahwahneechee People, who the Miwok tribe referred to as yohhe’meti meaning “they are killers.” Since the Miwoks have a similar term for “grizzly bear,”  there is a common misconception, even to this day, that Yosemite means the latter. So what makes Yosemite a killer choice, despite its obvious darker shades, is that this moniker is history, lineage, and heritage rolled into one! If nothing else, people will think twice before fooling around with your little one.
