US Popularity Rank: 26216

Origin: Hebrew

Meaning: God

Jehovah is a boy’s name of Hebrew origin, meaning “God.” This name is a vocalization of the Tetragrammaton (YHWH). These four letters are said to be the proper name of God in the Hebrew Bible and the Old Testament. The Tetragrammaton is today most commonly vocalized as Yahweh, but Jehovah came into use in England in the 16th century. Today it’s primarily used by Jehovah’s Witnesses and Mormons, the latter group believing it to be Jesus' name prior to his birth. It also appears in some widely-used translations of the Christian Bible.
