Origin: Greek

Meaning: Unknown

Io is a girl’s name of Greek origin. In Greek mythology, Io was an Argive princess and the daughter of Inachus, King of Argos. The alluring Io caught the eye of Zeus, much to the displeasure of his wife Hera, who transformed the young princess into a cow. Io later recovered her human form and went on to inspire the name of one of Jupiter’s moons. Her horns are said to represent the shape of the crescent moon, as well as connecting her namesake to the cycle of the natural world.
